BURMA/MYANMAR CYCLONE UPDATE
On May 3, 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit Burma resulting in an estimated casualty count of 78,000 people with another million people missing. The cyclone also destroyed infrastructure, flooded rice fields and demolished homes and schools. Four weeks after the disaster, aid had only reached 40% of 2.46 million survivors of the storm and basic relief supplies are still desperately needed in some areas.
Islamic Relief Worldwide has launched a campaign along with its partner offices around the world to raise approximately £350,000 over two years to help rebuild the devasted region. Partnering with numerous existing agencies in the area, Islamic Relief has a team setup on the ground and headquarters established in the Yagnon province. Current efforts are focused on providing food, clean drinking water and shelter to those devasted as well as supporting field clearning efforts to help farmers regain their livelihoods. Here are some images of the devastation and the work that Islamic Relief is carrying out in the region.

The earthqauke was the most severe to hit China in over 30 years. An initial £20,000 was allocated to cover immediate needs such as food, water, shelter and rescue efforts. Working closely with the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) and the Association for NGO International Economic and Technical Co-operation (GANGO), two of the largest operational NGOs in the country, IR China is well-equipped to provide the necessary relief for the current crisis.
