Over the last few months, the government of Sri Lanka launched concerted special task operations in Northern Sri Lanka to reclaim territory from rebel control. This has resulted in over 200,000 people being displaced and significant number of deaths and casualties. On the 19th of May 2009, having regained control of all territory of the island, and the confirmation of death of the rebel Tamil leader, the Sri Lankan government declared military victory.

Presently over 250,000 people remain displaced in welfare camps run by the government. Whilst basic needs of those displaced are being addressed by government, to some degree, the needs are far from met and additional humanitarian support remains.
