PBS showing Islamic Relief is getting to the most needy

More than 13 million people across East Africa are facing the worst drought in 60 years.  Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia are among the countries hardest hit by food and water shortages. Crops, livestock and homes have been completely destroyed. Without water, crops have failed, livestock has died and food prices are too high. People cannot afford the basic food supplies they need to survive. With malnutrition already over 20% in the region, aid agencies now estimate about $150 million is needed in aid to begin to alleviate the suffering in the region
Islamic Relief has witnessed people crossing the border from Somalia into Kenya as they attempt to flee the drought that affects their country. Islamic Relief has also seen hundreds of thousands of families arrive in Mogadishu and other areas trying to escape the drought and find a means to feed their family. In Kenya the food prices are at an all time high as a result of a decrease in livestock. The largest refugee camp in the world is in Kenya, on the Somali-Kenya border, with over 300,000 inhabitants. Islamic Relief has observed an increased number of cases of malnutrition and diarrhoea in children which is deadly in the current conditions. We are appealing for emergency aid to help with the humanitarian effort.

Humanitarian Response

Islamic Relief has been working in Kenya since 1993, Somalia since 1998, and Ethiopia since 2000 to help the people there who have lived under dire conditions for decades.

The Islamic Relief family is collectively responding through the Islamic Relief offices in East Africa, which have been delivering assistance all summer. So far, the East Africa offices have distributed

  • Food to 29,000 people
  • Access to water to 210,200 people
  • Health and nutrition services to 30,940 people, mostly children

Islamic Relief has also provided:

  • Emergency primary health care services to Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and host communities in the region of Mudug targeting 50,000 people
  • Canned meat (60 tons) and food parcels in Puntland and Somaliland
  • Primary healthcare for IDPs in South Central Somalia, Puntland and Somaliland
  • Emergency healthcare and water to IDPs in Afgooye Corridor South Central Somalia targeting 60,000 beneficiaries
  • Mass screenings for malnutrition
  • New water pumps

Ultimately, these projects aim to help at least 450,000 people. But we need your help to do so—the need for water, food and shelter is so extreme that your donations can literally save lives today.
