External Relations Coordiantor

The External Relations team manages relationships with key stakeholders within the media, government and community at large. They also produce research reports and engage in advocacy with these same key stakeholders.


This position is responsible for providing high level administrative support to the External Relations Department. This administrative support includes developing content, coordinating media requests, conducting research and representing IRC at events and conferences.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Government Relations

  • Conduct research on government representatives, policies, programmes and projects (all levels of government)
  • Engage with MP, MPPs and other government officials when asked.

Media Relations

  • Develop content that can be used for media, website and other internet and print news outlets
  • Maintain, update and monitor a national media database
  • Write and/or edit press releases
  • Reach out to journalists to build relationships and achieve media coverage on IRC’s programmes, projects and programmes. This will include promotion of press releases
  • Lead Islamic Relief’s media engagement

Policy and Advocacy

  • Write articles, reports, blog posts, literature reviews on IRC’s policy and advocacy initiative
  • Participate in advocacy events, conferences, initiatives as advised by the Head of External Relations
  • Conduct pieces of research on a range of topics for both domestic and international work
  • Work with IRC teams to develop campaigns and other advocacy initiatives

External partnerships

  • Support IRC’s external partnerships with other organizations – Muslim and non-Muslim
  • Organize local PR events and assist with national PR events
  • Engage with partners and develop partnerships to coordinate programmes, projects and initiatives
  • Represent IRC at events, conferences, functions, forums and meetings when necessary



  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or relevant field
  • Excellent written and spoken skills in English are required, including strong analytical and report-writing capability and strong attention to detail
  • Strong interpersonal and team skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to work both in a self-directed manner and collaboratively with other staff and stakeholders
  • Strong computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, electronic mail and database systems
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a wide range of cultural and political settings
  • Be able to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills
  • Proficient with Gmail, MS Office suite, Adobe Acrobat
  • Eligible to work in Canada
