The Marketing department is IRC’s brand protector. They promote IRC and its work through the website, social media, media production and digital marketing. They research and identify IRC’s audience and target marketing efforts to reach the right people with the right message. They develop and implement marketing and digital strategies to meet IRC’s objectives through raising funds online


Islamic Relief Canada is looking for a Direct Marketing Officer to work closely with the Content Team and assist with the creation of direct mail and email marketing campaigns. This role involves executing our email marketing strategy and producing content for other donor-facing content deliverables.

The candidate should have strong writing skills with attention to detail and a good understanding of various content styles, including fundraising and stewardship. The hours required will vary between 10-15 hrs/week at a fixed rate and the majority of the work can be done remotely.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Executing our email marketing strategy which includes a combination of fundraising emails, event emails, stewardship emails, and personalized content
  • Working with other departments to gather information to market nationwide events
  • Formatting emails according to templates
  • Maintaining up-to-date recipient data and creating segmented lists
  • Conducting multiple lead generation campaigns to increase our email database
  • Automating email responses based on donation behaviour
  • Writing and coordinating direct mailers to our donor base
  • Working on different email marketing platforms to ensure all external communication is consistent with the brand guidelines

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Absolute fluency in English with skill to deliver writing in engaging tones
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, as well as the ability to adopt the style, tone, and voice of our organization’s various types of content
  • 1-2 years of freelance writing, marketing, or content creation experience preferred
  • Past experience producing content for direct marketing
  • Strong skills in MS Excel and data management
  • Ability to cut the complexity and present immersive stories
  • Ability to maintain a high level of attention to detail and consistency in language and brand
  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently and manage projects with many moving parts
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to take both guidance and initiative
  • Detail-oriented and committed to deadlines
  • Bilingual/proficiency in French is an asset
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Note on logistics:

This arrangement is flexible, can be arranged to suit the candidate. 3 days will initially be needed for onboarding, and thereafter 1 day in office is ideal on a biweekly basis. Other work can be done remotely, along with a commitment to be accessible and keep communication channels flowing.
