Social Media Specialist

This role is responsible for understanding our audience and engaging with our donors and followers in unique and exciting ways. This role will work closely with the Content Marketing team to execute our social media strategy, plan our content calendar, and increase our brand awareness. This role also collaborates with other departments to ensure Islamic Relief Canada has a dynamic donor relations strategy and is engaging our target audience in creative ways.

The candidate must be a people’s person, enjoy using social media and building relationships with various stakeholders (followers, donors, organizations, influencers, and volunteers). They must bring creative energy and passion to a collaborative team environment. We’re looking for someone who enjoys developing and implementing  ideas for social media and community engagement, to increase brand awareness and engagement.

The candidate should have strong writing skills, with the ability to write clearly, simply and compellingly. They are required to have a strong attention to detail and a good understanding of the various content styles needed for online engagement, fundraising and stewardship.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Content Calendar & Social Media Platforms

  • Work collaboratively to plan, write, develop and post social media content, and assist with executing a Content Calendar that is timely and consistent
  • Work collaboratively to leverage our content and nationwide activities in creative ways to increase reach, engagement and brand awareness with new audiences
  • Leverage features of all social media platforms (eg. stories, reels, guides, etc) with high quality content to maintain relevance, reach and engagement with our audiences
  • Develop creative ideas and contribute to campaign planning and execution
  • Ensure that brand remains innovative and trustworthy through all forms of content
  • Maintain high level of attention to detail, and edit for consistency in quality, grammar, spelling, tone and brand 
  • Create and deliver a positive user experience on all platforms
  • Manage administrative maintenance of all platforms and social media tools

Strategic Growth

  • Work to improve our presence on all existing and new platforms
  • Implement and build on current marketing strategies to achieve our goals
  • Build positive relationships with social media partners and influencers and work closely with them to facilitate our marketing strategies and goals
  • Research audience preferences and discover current social trends to develop engaging text, image and video content for all social media platforms
  • Stay up-to-date with changes in all social platforms ensuring maximum effectiveness
  • Liaise with other departments to maintain consistent donor and stakeholder relations 



  • 1-2 years of marketing or content creation experience is required
  • Past experience producing social media content, managing multiple platforms, as well as channel-specific knowledge (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.) is required
  • Creative and energetic with the ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands
  • Ability to cut the complexity and present immersive stories
  • Ability to maintain high level of attention to detail and consistency in language and brand
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, presentation skills, and analytical skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently 
  • Ability to manage projects with many moving parts
  • Motivated self-starter who is able to take both guidance and initiative
  • Detail-oriented and committed to deadlines
  • Works well in a team with a collaborative lens
  • Bilingual/proficiency in French is an asset
  • Eligible to work in Canada
