CEO transition announcement

30 July, 2025

Over the past decade, Islamic Relief Canada has experienced remarkable growth, evolving into one of the leading humanitarian organizations in the country. Usama Khan, who joined the organization in 2015 and has served as CEO since 2021, has played a pivotal role in this journey. Under his leadership, IRC has expanded its impact both nationally and globally—delivering aid more effectively, mobilizing grassroots communities, and contributing meaningfully to critical conversations in the humanitarian sector.

After thoughtful reflection and ongoing dialogue with the Board of Directors, Usama has decided that this is the right time for a leadership transition.

As IRC enters this next chapter, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Tufail Hussain as the Interim Chief Executive Officer of Islamic Relief Canada. Tufail brings a wealth of experience and a strong record of leadership, having previously led Islamic Relief in the UK, where he led successful initiatives in community development, strategic fundraising, culture transformation and organizational growth.

“I am honoured to join Islamic Relief Canada at such a pivotal time,” said Tufail Hussain. “The organization has earned an incredible reputation for its integrity, impact, and innovation. I look forward to building on this strong foundation and continuing to serve those most in need, both in Canada and around the world.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Usama for his visionary leadership over the past four years as CEO. His dedication and impact have been instrumental in shaping the organization’s success and growth. Usama will continue to support the organization in a strategic capacity throughout the transition.

“It has been an immense privilege to lead Islamic Relief Canada,” said Usama Khan. “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and have full confidence in Tufail’s leadership. IRC’s future is bright, and I look forward to continuing to support our mission and the wider humanitarian sector.”
