Category 5 Hurricane Melissa poses a severe threat to Jamaica.
The hurricane, which is one of the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic, has brought catastrophic damage — submerging towns, destroying homes, crippling infrastructure, and leaving nearly the entire island without power.
The full scale of the damage and loss of life from Hurricane Melissa is still unknown, as many areas remain inaccessible. At least seven people have been confirmed dead across the Caribbean so far.
The people of Jamaica are still reeling from the devastation Hurricane Beryl left just 16 months ago. Today, these families are living out the same horror — emergency shelters are packed to the brim, and entire communities are without clean water, food, and medical care.

Hurricane Melissa’s outer bands tore through parts of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, unleashing heavy rains that triggered landslides and flooding. In eastern Cuba, thousands were forced to evacuate as the storm moved north.
The damage is immense. Homes, farmland, and roads have been destroyed, leaving many families without their livelihoods. Recovery will take years, but right now our focus is on emergency response to ensure families have enough food to eat.
