Islamic Relief Canada is opening up an interest form (linked below), where you can register your interest for the Makkah to Madinah Cycling Challenge. This is more than just a physical challenge. It’s a unique opportunity to experience a spiritual journey along the historic Hijrah route while fundraising to support our Orphan Care Fund.

During this incredible journey, you’ll cycle 503 km, pushing your limits while taking in breathtaking landscapes and experiencing the rich Islamic history connected to the journey from Makkah to Madinah.

Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in Islamic reminders, connect with fellow cyclists, and experience this historic route from the saddle. You’ll also have the opportunity to complete Umrah, making this an experience that challenges you physically while strengthening your spiritual connection.

Days 1-4 – Makkah

Upon arrival in Jeddah, you will be met by the team and travel to Makkah to begin your journey.

During your stay, you will have the opportunity to perform Umrah and spend time in worship in the sacred city. The group will also take part in guided visits to historic Islamic sites connected to the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and early Islamic history.

Your time in Makkah will include opportunities for reflection, ibadah and group activities before attending Jummah prayer.

Days 5-8 – Journey from Makkah to Madinah

The challenge journey begins as the group travels toward the blessed city of Madinah.

Along the route, you will pass through significant and historic locations including Khulais, Mastorah and the revered city of Badr, home to one of the most important events in Islamic history.

Throughout the journey, there will be opportunities for reflection, team bonding and learning more about the historical importance of the areas you travel through.

Days 9-11 – Madinah

The final part of the challenge takes place in the peaceful city of Madinah.

You will take part in guided tours of important Islamic landmarks connected to the life and legacy of our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him), while also having time to pray and reflect in Masjid an-Nabawi.

The journey concludes with Jummah prayer in Madinah before departure arrangements begin.

What is included in the registration fee?

The registration fee will cover your accommodation, transportation within Saudi Arabia, guided tours, meals, and overall program support.


Flights to and from Saudi Arabia and Umrah visa for entry into the country are not included in the package. These will need to be arranged for by the participants themselves.


Do I need prior cycling experience?

Strong baseline fitness and some cycling experience strongly recommended.


Can I extend my stay after the challenge?

Yes, but you must arrange your own accommodation and transportation after the duration of this challenge.


Is travel insurance required?

Yes, participants must secure travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip interruptions. This is not included in the package and will need to be acquired by the participants themselves.

  • Age: Participants must be 18 years of age or older to be able to travel alone. Participants below the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Physical Fitness: Individuals should be physically fit and capable of participating in physically demanding challenges.
  • Health Conditions: Participants should not have any severe medical or health conditions that could jeopardize their well-being, such as physical injuries, heart conditions, or pregnancy. It is advisable to consult a doctor before signing up.
  • Fundraising Goal: Each participant must raise 100% of their fundraising goal before the challenge begins, regardless of whether they are travelling separately or as a group. For this challenge, participants have the option to raise funds as a group.
  • Selection Process: All applicants will undergo a selection process to ensure that participants meet the specific requirements and criteria of the challenge. Selected participants will be notified and provided with further instructions on registering and preparing for the trip.
