$900 covers 1 missed fast without reason (Kaffarah)

LAST UPDATED: October 2026

What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a charitable compensation made by Muslims for intentionally breaking any fasts during the holy month of Ramadan without a valid reason.

To atone for the missed or intentionally broken fast, you must fast continuously for 60 days. If you are unable to do that, you must feed 60 poor people at a rate of $15 per person (the cost of an average meal in Canada).

Kaffarah must be paid for fasts deliberately missed in Ramadan. If there is a valid reason, Fidya (Fidyah) must be paid instead. The penalty for Kaffarah is much higher than that of Fidya and should be avoided where possible.

Calculate your Kaffarah

The amount required for one missed fast is $900 (60 × $15). To calculate how much you need to pay, multiply $900 by the number of fasts you have missed or broken intentionally.

Where $900 comes from:60 people × $15 = $900

When and how to pay

Kaffarah can be paid at any time throughout the year. You must pay if you have knowingly broken any fasts during the holy month of Ramadan unnecessarily. You can give your Kaffarah online.

Kaffarah or Fidya?

Both are paid for fasts that are missed, but they apply in different situations.

Kaffarah for breaking a promise

Paying Kaffarah is necessary for breaking a promise or oath. For the redemption of a broken oath, you must ask Allah (SWT) for forgiveness and pay the amount equivalent to feeding 10 people at a rate of $15 per person (the cost of an average meal in Canada).

The amount to be paid for a broken promise is therefore $150.
