Islamic Relief responds to deadly floods in Afghanistan

The United Nations World Food Programme has reported that flash floods in northern Afghanistan have killed 300 people and left thousands without a home, with many more residents still missing.

In a country strife with poverty and severe hunger, there is mounting fear that the floods will push affected families further towards starvation.

Islamic Relief is on the ground in Baghlan, providing essential humanitarian assistance to families affected by the floods.

Please support our Global Emergencies fund today, giving anything you can to help save lives .

Flash floods displace thousands in Baghlan, Afghanistan

300 + killed | 1,600 + injured

Afghanistan has seen significant rainfall since early April. Consecutive days of heavy rainfall in mid-May have led to extensive flooding in Takhar, Badakhshan, Baghlan, and northern regions of the country.

According to Save the Children, approximately 600,000 people, half of whom are children, reside in the five severely affected districts of Baghlan. In the worst-hit province of Baghlan, more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed

The sudden rush of rainwater came as a surprise for residents, leaving them little to no time to evacuate with their belongings. Road infrastructure and vital agricultural lands now lay in ruins.

The full extent of the damage caused by the floods remains unknown, as Baghlan is not easily accessible. It is expected that the number of residents impacted by the floods will only increase in the coming days as rescue operations are underway.

The Crisis in Afghanistan

15.8 million Afghans are food insecure, of which 7.8 million are children, and their lives are at stake. The people of Afghanistan have suffered back-to-back disasters over the last couple of years, on top of extreme hunger and economic crises.

The cumulative impact is devastating, and more than 23 million people — two-thirds of the Afghan population — need humanitarian aid and protection. The situation is getting more dire by the day.

For people across Afghanistan, life is incredibly challenging:

  • 1 out of every 5 families in Afghanistan have been forced to send their children out to work
  • 97% of Afghans are at risk of poverty
  • 3 million children under five are expected to suffer from malnutrition, and 1 million of these children are at risk of dying

Your Donations in Action in Afghanistan

Your donations to Afghanistan have funded vital emergency, health and protection, livelihood and education, as well as development programs across the country, reaching over 385,000 Afghans to date.

Following the October 2023 earthquakes and refugee crisis, Islamic Relief launched new projects for recovery, ensuring your donations reach those in most need. These projects include:

  • Distribute multi-purpose cash to 850 returnee families in Kandahar
  • Provide medical care to 7,849 people via mobile medical clinics
  • Deliver 76,000 litres of clean potable water via water trucking and 17 water tanks
  • Install clean water systems, handwashing points and latrines, as well as distribute water storage, hygiene items, and dignity kits

Islamic Relief on the ground in Afghanistan

Islamic Relief has been a leading charity in Afghanistan since 1992. We were one of the few charities working in Afghanistan during the military incursions, and we have offices in Kabul, Herat, Bamyan, Nangarhar and Balkh.

Together with local communities, government agencies, and partners on the ground, we’re working to tackle food insecurity, poverty, poor sanitation and hygiene practices, and more.

Community remains central to our work, and we’re cultivating more collaboration and community-led work to make sure the needs of the Afghan communities we are serving are met first and foremost. This ensures the communities we are servicing retain the tools and knowledge to be self-sufficient and break the cycle of poverty.

And yet, there is still so much more that needs to be done.

Donate to Afghanistan and help us bring urgent relief today.
