September 13th, 2023, Burlington, ON - Islamic Relief Canada has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to help those left unhoused by unprecedented flooding in eastern Libya.
Parts of Eastern Libya have been destroyed after catastrophic flooding swept away infrastructure and entire neighbourhoods from flooding caused by Storm Daniel. Over 5,000 people have lost their lives, at least 10,000 individuals are reported missing, and thousands are now displaced. These numbers are only expected to rise in the coming days. Families have been separated, with little hope of reconnecting in the coming days.
Islamic Relief teams have been dispatched from around the world to assist with local relief efforts in Libya and are working with local partners on the ground to deliver vital aid, including food packs, blankets, and mattresses to displaced victims.
This is the second devastating disaster to hit North Africa in just a matter of days. The mourning period continues as North Africa tries to recover from the floods in Libya along with the earthquake in Morocco, where Islamic Relief has also sent an emergency team.
