What is happening in Sudan?
Sudan is suffering the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Yet, the world has stopped paying attention.
Three years on from the start of the war in April 2023, more than 33 million people are struggling to survive.
The scale of the crisis is staggering. Families have lost everything – homes, livelihoods, loved ones. Entire cities lie in ruins. Everything people depend on for survival has been destroyed.

The reality in Sudan
The war has scarred every part of Sudan. Families have been torn apart. Schools, hospitals, and places of worship are now rubble. Main roads and transport routes have become too dangerous to cross.
Food production has declined, the economy lies in ruins and essential foods remain out of reach for many families.
At least 9,000,000 people are still displaced internally across the country, surviving in makeshift camps, under trees or even on the side of the road. This is the largest displacement crisis on earth.
More than 4,000,000 people have fled into neighboring countries like Chad and South Sudan.
More than 150,000 people are estimated to have been killed, but the real death toll is likely to be much higher as fatalities are believed to be underreported. The death toll from hunger, disease and lack of basic services could rise far higher.
The violence shows no sign of abating. Since the beginning of 2026, Sudan has seen an upsurge in drone attacks. More than 500 people have been killed this year alone.
How is Islamic Relief supporting people in Sudan?
Islamic Relief has worked in Sudan for over 40 years, and remains by the sides of families caught up in the violence. Islamic Relief was first founded as a response to the famine in Darfur in 1984. Sadly, 42 years later, Sudan is still in turmoil.
As war continues across Sudan, families are facing widespread hunger, displacement and the collapse of essential services. With your support, Islamic Relief has reached more than 1.2 million people with vital aid, delivered by teams on the ground — many of whom are displaced themselves.
Our local teams are working tirelessly across the country, including in central Darfur, north and west Kordofan, Khartoum, Gedaref, Red Sea State, Al Jazirah, Sennar and Blue Nile.
Beyond immediate aid, we are also supporting communities through psychosocial care, creating safe spaces for women and children to heal, connect and rebuild a sense of stability.
What aid is Islamic Relief delivering in Sudan?
- Food and clean water to families
- Vital medicines and supplies to health clinics
- Seeds and livestock to farmers so they can earn a living
- Support for takaaya (community kitchens) in regions such as North Kordofan and Darfur
- Sponsorship for orphans and their guardians

The people of Sudan have been abandoned by the international community, their anguish invisible. Despite these devastating facts, most of the world has moved on. Headlines have faded and critical aid pledges remain unfulfilled.
